What a year in cinema! As lockdowns released and theaters reopened, cinema entered an incredibly strange time where studios released plenty of backup content leading to plenty of good but also plenty of bad! Continuing tradition, I am here to share the 10 films that I found to be the worst of the year based on my viewing experience and subjective opinion. Keep in mind that where I have seen nearly 400 new releases this year, I have not seen absolutely everything and don't necessarily go out of my way often to see "bad" movies so this is definitely a subjective list from me rather than anything objective. Keep in mind also that my eligibility for these lists was the full calendar year unlike how the Awards Season included January and February in last year's eligibility. As always if you want to follow my reviews throughout the year further or engage with me in any way follow me on twitter @BP_MovieReviews! With that said, lets get on with the Top 10 Worst Films of 2021!

#10-Great WhiteDon't get me wrong, I love a good creature survival film but Great White clearly stands as one of the worst outings for the genre. Clearly a victim of a meek budget, the effects within the film are genuinely some of the worst seen in modern cinema while the cast and characters all range from tolerable to flat out annoying. The film works on absolutely no level, including parody, leading to an all around miserable viewing experience that isn't entertaining or thrilling. |
#9-EternalsIt was exactly one year ago that I declared Nomadland the best film of 2020 and praised filmmaker Chloé Zhao for finding her magnum opus. It gives me no pleasure that this year, Zhao makes the opposite list for what is without a doubt the weakest addition to the MCU to date. At an offensive 157-minutes, there is not a single piece of Eternals that works or captivates. The film drags at a snails pace through some of the worst writing and filmmaking seen in the blockbuster genre truly becoming one of the most painful viewing experiences of the year. |
#8-The Kissing Booth 3In a year where To All the Boys: Always and Forever shocked me and delivered something of genuine quality, I was willing to give The Kissing Booth 3 a chance but the film continued to give some of the weakest teen content seen on Netflix as a whole. While more watchable than the second film, this one is far less funny as a meme and really just felt like a painful final goodbye that added nothing of value or interest to the already rather worthless franchise. Best of luck in gaming Elle! |
#7-Thunder ForceWith every Melissa McCarthy comedy one hopes that she can find the same magic she once had in the genre and with ever film it seems to get further and further from it. Thunder Force is clearly bottom of the barrel as McCarthy and Octavia Spencer fail to say anything funny or interesting in this superhero "comedy". What feels even more upsetting is the quality of performance both of these women can give, such a shame to see them give the time of day to things like this. |
#6-Coming 2 AmericaWhile the last couple of years has seen a number of unneeded sequels for iconic projects, Coming 2 America might just be the most painful of the bunch. The comedy is painfully unfunny while the plot itself is beyond predictable and boring. The film hopes that references to the first film will be enough to draw audiences in and be rewarding enough but in reality, this was nothing more than a recipe for disaster. |
#5-CherryPositioning itself to be Apple TV+'s first major awards contender, Cherry seemed like it would be something special but turned out to be one of the worst made films of the year. With absolutely atrocious editing that is almost comically aggressive for a shocking 140-minutes, this felt like torture. |
#4-Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe OriginsSnake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins might be the most paint by numbers film of the year. Taking no risks and making no effort to be anything close to unique for 121-minutes, the film felt offensively boring and basic. If you want to create a worthy franchise then maybe one should do anything to inspire an audience to want to come back for a round 2. |
#3-DashcamThis one is sad. Premiering at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival and coming as the follow up for the creators of last year's excellent Host horror film, there was tons of hype for Dashcam but the film failed to reach any of them. An annoying film filled with truly grating characters that lazily uses modern political lines to evoke emotion, this was grating and truly has to be one of the most disappointing films of the year. |
#2-You Can't Kill MemeUnlike last year's incredibly documentary Feels Good Man which explored internet culture in a poignant and confident manner, You Can't Kill Meme gets completely lost within its subject. When your final product includes the thesis that genuinely meme power led to Hilary Clinton having medical issues, you are doing something wrong. |
#1-MusicWhat can one say about Music? Not just is the film clearly problematic but it also is simply a horribly made feature that is nearly unwatchable due to how boring it is. The film transitions from uncomfortable portrayals of autism to full blown Sia music videos, this is absolutely terrible and is the only film on this list that truly feels like it has no redeeming qualities and clearly stands as the worst film of 2021. |
