Enjoy my top 5 most anticipated July 2019 releases, to make it simple with the ever growing amount of complicated release dates I am only going to be referring to the release dates for movies as they come out near me, for example a foreign film that came out in New York/Los Angeles last December might be opening near me just now so I will count that as a ____ release for the purpose of this series. Also if you want to check out the trailer of a film just click on its poster to be sent to the trailer! Without further ado lets get into my top 5 most anticipated releases for July 2019!

#5-The Lion KingThe Lion King is one of the most well known and adored Disney films of all time so of course a remake is going to have mixed reactions no matter what but surprisingly the conversation around this film has been mostly positive at least from what I have seen. The animation looks incredible, so much so that there still is a debate surrounding if this counts as an animated movie or not (which is clearly is as it is literally all animation). It also has an A+ voice cast with so many people I love who don't appear on the big screen that often. If this was earlier in the year this would be higher on the list but after the flops that were both Dumbo and Aladdin I have my reservations about this film. Sure the team is different and Jon Favreau has proved himself with The Jungle Book but if there was a film on this list to end up being a total flop I would predict it would be this one.
The Lion King will be released wide on July 19th |
#4-MidsommarBeing Ari Aster's sophomore film after the huge hit that was Hereditary so many people have their eyes on this film. Hereditary was so many peoples favorite film of the year and where I wouldn't go that far there was so much I liked about that film and the fact that it looks like Ari Aster is trying something completely different here makes me excited. At least according to this film's trailer It has such an interesting ascetic for a horror film being bright and full of sunshine. The story already has some interesting elements and now that we see where this director can go with the ending of Hereditary the possibilities are wide open here. Even though I normally am not the biggest horror fan I cannot help but be intrigued by this film and I really hope Ari Aster is able to live up to the legend that he has created for himself.

#3-Spider-Man: Far From HomeComing out of Avengers: Endgame I honestly didn't know how I was going to feel about the MCU going forward. I know multiple people who are dropping out or just not caring as much after Endgame but I would be lying if I said that was me. This film is a great example of why being a connected universe that keeps going is so interesting, we really have never seen a superhero movie like this where someone like Peter Parker has to deal with the death of Tony Stark after we saw them grow so close together. It is an interesting emotional place I am excited to explore and seeing both Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal in the same movie is really exciting. Unfortunately past the emotional arc that Peter is going through the story of this movie does look pretty dull. Sure they could pull some twists but much more than normal it seems like we have a good understanding of what is going on here and honestly it doesn't seem that interesting. Hopefully they will surprise us and pull something creative but even if the plot was complete shit I would at least be able to at at least drool over the actors which is good enough for me.

#2-Once Upon a Time In HollywoodQuentin Tarantino is a troubling director, he has so many personal flaws and issues that are hard to ignore but he also makes films of such great quality. Coming out of its Cannes release audience members were all over Once Upon a Time In Hollywood with some even claiming it was Tarantino's best film which is a bold statement with his strong filmography. The trailers have looked fantastic for this movie and it takes place in a time I am really interested in. Also this film apparently is really toned down on violence compared to most Tarantino films so I am interested to see how he works without that bold element he uses so much of the time.
Once Upon a Time In Hollywood releases wide July 26th |
#1-The FarewellA24 at it's finest, The Farewell looks to be one of the most sweet and emotional films of the year. I have a soft spot for elderly ladies (probably why The Golden Girls is one of my favorite shows of all time) and this seems so genuine and sweet. The trailer makes me nearly cry every time I see it and anyone who has seen the movie has nothing but amazing things to say about it. The Farewell easily could be one of the top movies of the year for me and I really hope it does good at the box office to support these diverse and unique voices.
The Farewell starts a rolling release on July 12th |
