Enjoy my top 5 most anticipated August 2019 releases, to make it simple with the ever growing amount of complicated release dates I am only going to be referring to the release dates for movies as they come out near me to the best of my ability, for example a foreign film that came out in New York/Los Angeles last December might be opening near me just now so I will count that as a ____ release for the purpose of this series. Though do know that as we get into awards season theaters near me might not be updating their releases quick enough so there might be a couple films that I list as a ___ release that ends up coming out the following month. Also if you want to check out the trailer of a film just click on its poster to be sent to the trailer! Without further ado lets get into my top 5 most anticipated releases for January 2020!
(1917, Clemency, Just Mercy, & Weathering With You were not eligible for this list due to me already seeing them before making this list)

#5-The Rhythm SectionJanuary normally has slim picking for lists like this and 2020 is no different. I will say I know nothing about The Rhythm Section and fully expect it to be a crappy dull action movie but hey, I like Blake Lively & Jude Law so I guess it can fill in my #5 slot. The Rhythm Section releases wide January 31st |
#4-DolittleLISTEN, NO I DO NOT THINK THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO BE GOOD IN ANYWAY but like, it looks like a trashy film that could be a bit fun at least. Also maybe one of the strong ensemble will actually surprise and be a piece of gold that found its way into the coal mine this film surely will be. Like I said before, January is slim pickings and somehow Dolittle legitimately is in my top 5 films I am most excited to see. Dolittle releases wide on January 17th |
#3-Gretel & HanselThe face that everyone is shitting on Gretel & Hansel simply because of the name change is ridiculous. I remember seeing the trailer for the first time in theaters and being really taken back by the cinematography and camera work shown during it. Where the trailer does have elements of it that makes it seem like a traditional jump scare horror movie it also does feel like more of a psychological thriller which is trying to attract a mainstream audience through a misleading trailer like It Comes at Night for example. This theory is backed up by the director Oz Perkins' last few projects which have been psychological thrillers. Where I wasn't a huge fan of his previous film The Blackcoat's Daughter, it also wasn't complete shit and I am open to giving Perkins another chance. I hope that this does surprise most people and be an intriguing version of the classic story. Gretel & Hansel releases wide on January 31st |
#2-Les MisérablesEvery year there is at least one foreign language film from the previous award season that finds it release in January and the one coming out that I haven't seen yet is Les Misérables. Looking past the injustice of this film getting selected over Portrait of a Lady on Fire, this has been a film I have been looking forward to since it got a good reception at the 2019 Cannes film festival and I am excited to finally see it. Les Misérables will have a rolling release throughout January starting on January 10th |
#1-Bojack Horseman S6 P2Sure this is a list of my most anticipated films of the year but considering that this month's releases suck so bad and that this is legitimately probably my most anticipated piece of media for the entire year I am putting this #1. Bojack Horseman pushed into a new mature tone with part one of its sixth and final season and to finally see what probably is my favorite show of all time finally come to an end of course has me on the edge of my seat in anticipation. Give me this over any other movie coming out this month easily. Bojack Horseman Season 6 Part 2 drops January 31st on Netflix. |
