This is a new series I want to start doing every month exclusively on my website, I don't really have a place where I can talk about upcoming new releases that I am excited about so once a month I will be creating a top 5 list of the films I am most anticipated for in the upcoming month. To make it simple with the ever growing amount of complicated release dates I am only going to be referring to movies that come out near me, for example a foreign film that came out in New York/Los Angeles last December might be opening near me just now so I will count that as a ____ release for the purpose of this series. Also if you want to check out the trailer of a film just click on its poster to be sent to the trailer! Without further ado lets get into my top 5 most anticipated releases for April 2019!
(Under the Silver Lake, Shazam!, Peterloo, and Penguin Highway are not eligible for this list due to me viewing each film before making this list)

#5-Unicorn StoreFinally making its wide release after screening at TIFF 2017, Unicorn Store is Brie Larson's directorial debut and looks like so much fun! This is a movie that looks to be full of life and fun as it tackles the subject of balancing the need to grow up as one ages while also finding and not letting go of the happiness and magic most people have as a child. Sure the plot seems to me more traditional and cliched yet the trailer would suggest that there still is some strong emotion that will still connect with audiences. I am also of course excited to see more of Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson on screen together considering how fantastic their chemistry was in Captain Marvel. I am always excited to see new people step into the directing role and I am really excited to see what Brie Larson does after waiting to see this movie for nearly a year and a half.
Unicorn Store will be released wide on Netflix on April 5th |
#4-High LifeThe biggest issue I have with doing this series is how little I look into trailers and promotional materials for most films. I tend to go in completely blind and I can't say that I have seen a lot from High Life the newest film from A24. I will say however what I have seen definitely had been, bizarre. Following some storyline about reproduction in space the marketing for High Life seems to be playing into the weirdness of the plot (at least from what I have seen) and it has stood out to me due to that. This film also just has my general A24 hype despite mixed reviews coming out of TIFF last year. Robert Patterson is the lead in this film and considering he blew away audiences in his last outing with A24 (Good Time) I have full faith that he could be a huge standout from the beginning of this year. I hope that this has the depth and interesting plot that it seems to.
High Life has a rolling release throughout April but comes out near me on April 19th |
#3-HellboyConfession time, I have not seen the previous Hellboy movies which is kind of surprising considering Guillermo del Toro is one of my favorite directors, but for whatever reason I never got around to seeing them. That means I have had no previous relationship with this character so I am going into the newest Hellboy extremely fresh with no expectations whatsoever from the previous series of films. Judging by the trailers I have seen this movie looks like so much fun, it has an over the top comedic energy that we are seeing more and more of with the rise of popularity of that tone from the MCU and films such as Deadpool. Where this type of comedy is definitely is loosing its impact I can still have a great time with it. David Harbour has looked great in this role and it seems like another role that he will nail on the road of success he has been having since Stranger Things. At the end of the day the success of this movie is going to come down to how far they commit to its fun tone considering the actual heart in this film doesn't seem to be that strong (something that hurt a movie like Shazam! in my opinion), but I am hopeful that this could be another great superhero film that will continue to show the potential in Rated-R movies.
Hellboy releases wide April 12th |
#2-Missing LinkFor a lot of people I am predicting Missing Link to be the surprise of the month. When the trailer for this stop motion film came out so many people were quick to throw it to the side as just another basic animated movie which is crazy to me. Not only does the visual style and jokes featured in the trailer look really solid to me but this is the newest film from Laika. Laika is the company that has made classic animated films like Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, they are yet to make a bad movie in my opinion and I don't understand why the hype around this studio is not grabbing more people in the way of a company like A24 for example (though I would predict its due to the lack of releases and general disrespect most people give animation). Even if it doesn't contain the depth of those films I fully expect Missing Link to be another really solid movie and I have a feeling this is going to be a surprise hit for most who have been sleeping on this movie up to this point.

#1-Avengers: EndgameOf course this is my #1 most anticipated film of the month, I mean this is literally my #1 most anticipated film of the year. Despite not being the MCU fanboy that so many others are I cannot help but be interested in how they are going to wrap up this 10 year story, especially from where it left off in Avengers: Infinity War. Where I am not that curious with what the end result of this film will be as it feels really obvious I am really curious with how they are going to get to that point. I love how little we know about the actual plot of this movie and to finally get some closure with some of these characters is very exciting for me. This is one of two huge movie events of the year (Alongside Star Wars Episode 9) and I just really hope they are able to pull it off.
Avengers: Endgame releases wide April 26th |
