Climax (2019)
The only way I can describe Climax is if you mix 2018's Suspiria and 2017's mother! yet take away the messages and meaning. Telling the story of a group of dancers who go through hell one night as their punch gets spiked this movie is like a fever dream. It is chaotic and messy, which does help make a good tone for the film.

Filled with blinding color and chaotic characters this movie does a great job at building an environment that truly feels like hell. This movie is exhausting at times and you constantly want to just leave the situation and I mean that in a good way. Where I never want to return to this movie it is doing a great job at what it is trying to do. It is trying to be unpleasant and gross, it is what this movie should be and the fact that it hits so effectively is a huge success for the film. I just wish they did more with this from a plot perspective, where the tone really knocks it out of the park it is the only thing that will stick with me from this film. Where it does have characters they are far from interesting and have no real development. I can't say I got to know any of them deep down or got invested in any of their arches. They feel more like pawns to get to the gross visuals and plot elements rather than deep and interesting themselves.
Climax is a perfect example of style over substance, where it is an experience that hits you at first it lacks the depth or message to stay with you beyond a few days. A24 continues to have a forgettable and bland start to 2019. I can only hope they can turn it around with Gloria Bell next month.
