The Golden Popcorn Legacy Award:
Jean Cocteau
Jean Cocteau's legacy as an artist continues to live on to this day. Developing a wide array of output across multiple mediums throughout his life, Cocteau pushed the boundaries of not just what an artist could be, but what art itself could represent. His feature films included revolutionary ideas both in subject and narrative with Cocteau's unique queer perspective shining brightly in The Blood of a Poet. Cocteau's non-cinematic works also created a rich foundation for adaptation including Pedro Almodóvar's 2023 short film, Strange Way of Life. Cocteau's style still is influential to the form today and his inspired touch can still be felt as one of the brightest spots of early cinema.
The Golden Popcorn in Filmmaking Award:
Hayao Miyazaki
After retiring in 2013 with The Wind Rises, Hayao Miyazaki's name returned to the big screen as director with The Boy and the Heron. Beyond just his philosophical effort within this feature, Miyazaki's impact on the world of film and anime is undeniable. Bursting onto the scene as an in-between animator in the 1960s before finally finding his voice as a director and working to systematically change the anime industry with the founding of Studio Ghibli, Miyazaki not only created the gold standard for the anime medium in Japan but also is responsible for the biggest works that translated to success across the world. Miyazaki brought home the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003 for his masterpiece Spirited Away which remains the only anime title to take home the prize. Creating 12 feature films throughout his career, up to this point, Miyazaki's filmography is a rich journey through history that is reflective not only of masterful storytelling, but also a poetic exploration of the deeper dreams and ghosts found within Miyazaki himself with the reality of his soul blending with imaginative fantasy.
The Golden Popcorn in Acting Award:
Lily Gladstone
While still early in her career, Lily Gladstone has already proven to be one of the most talented actors working today. In all 4 of her 2023 acting efforts: Hokti in Reservation Dogs, Tana in The Unknown Country, Jax in Fancy Dance, and most famously Mollie in Killers of the Flower Moon, Gladstone has demonstrated both vulnerability and power, proving the complexity of her ability and emotional layers she can achieve. In a film containing the talents of Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, and John Lithgow, it says something that Killers of the Flower Moon is a film belonging to Gladstone and her on-screen presence.
Best Picture:
- Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.
