God I was not looking forward to this movie. Dreamworks is a very hit or miss company for me, where some of their works can be amazing (Rise of the Guardians, The entire Kung Fu Panda series, and How to Train Your Dragon) there are plenty of films that just completely miss the mark (Shrek 3 and 4, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, and Shark Tale). I only actually saw the first trailer for trolls (It's not that I didn't get around to watching them, I just flat out refused too). Trolls potentially had the worse first trailer I had ever seen. Not only did the characters look bland and boring but they just had to play one of if not the worst song in history (Watch Me by Silento) but they included the bloody dance with it. If this also discouraged you too see this movie I can say that this movie is almost nothing like the trailer. I am actually kinda shocked that they even put out that trailer in the first place, not even the character designs were close to the final results. So with that said could this movie actually be any good?
The short answer to that question is yes. Let's start out with the positives. First off the animation in this movie is fantastic. It is bright and lively. Full of vibrant colors this movie just screams happiness which creates a beautiful contrast when compared to the dull world that most of this movie takes place in. I think that color is something that is not used nearly enough in animated movies and really helped this movie stand out. The animation itself is also really good, the actual movement of the trolls is very smooth and crisp. The voice acting was also a positive in this movie. Both Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick have good chemistry as the two main leads and do fit their respective characters.
However this is not enough to save this movie. The plot itself was a major negative in this movie. We have seen everything that takes place in this movie a million times and this movie made no effort to change the formula. In fact they make it worse. Justin Timberlake character's backstory is honestly laughable. It is so cliched and so over done. There are some jokes that work but even these good moments are rushed. The worst part of this movie was the fact that it was a musical. None of the music flowed together at all (Gorrilaz and Timberlake don't really mash well) but the music itself was just distracting. It almost constantly took away from the rest of the movie. Overall Trolls is not utter shit, it isn't great by any means but I can see young children love this film while the adults can enjoy some fantastic animation.
