top 5 anticipated february 2020 releases
by carson timar

Enjoy my top 5 most anticipated February 2020 releases, to make it simple with the ever growing amount of complicated release dates I am only going to be referring to the release dates for movies as they come out near me to the best of my ability, for example a foreign film that came out in New York/Los Angeles last December might be opening near me just now so I will count that as a ____ release for the purpose of this series. Though do know that as we get into awards season theaters near me might not be updating their releases quick enough so there might be a couple films that I list as a ___ release that ends up coming out the following month. Also if you want to check out the trailer of a film just click on its poster to be sent to the trailer! Without further ado lets get into my top 5 most anticipated releases for February 2020!

(And Then We Danced, Beanpole, Birds of Prey, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, & Ride Your Wave were not eligible for this list due to me already seeing them before making this list)

#5-Horse Girl

Being a big Alison Brie fan it is of course exciting seeing her star in but also make her screenwriting debut in Horse Girl. Coming as one of Netflix's first releases of substance in 2020, Horse Girl got decent reviews coming out of it's debut at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and considering my 2nd favorite film of the year Paddleton was a shocking early Netflix release that came out of nowhere I have to keep my eye open for films like this.

#4-Emma

As soon as the trailer dropped for Emma there was a general feeling of blandness around it. From easy comparisons to The Favourite to the trailer just not really being all that, Emma has lacked a ton of hype for it. Being a huge Anya Taylor-Joy fan I am still looking forward to this movie which seems to be trying to replicate the clever style of The Favourite but I would be lying if I said the trailer did much for me. Early reviews have been positive and I expect it to be good, the marketing has just been a bit off.

#3-My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising

Despite the show drastically slowing down after its incredible second season, I was really impressed by the first My Hero Academia movie and am looking forward to My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising. I know nothing about the plot of this movie and I didn't even end up finishing the most recent season of the show, but after enjoying the standalone first film so much, I really hope they are able to pull it off again.

#2-Downhill

Continuing the tradition of highly acclaimed foreign films having english remakes. Downhill serves as the remake of 2014's Force Majeure and got very mixed reviews coming out of its Sundance debut last month. The thing that keeps me looking forward to the film is simply Will Ferrell. Where I am not a huge comedic Will Ferrell fan, when it comes to dramatic roles he is super underrated in my opinion and to see him take on something more serious after a while is nice to see. Sure this movie probably won't be anything incredible, but I hope we at least get a good performance here and maybe it will be able to surprise and be a solid remake like Gloria Bell which came out around this time last year.

#1-The Invisible Man

For my 2018 ButteredPopcorn Movie Month series I reviewed most of the Universal Monster movies and The Invisible Man series definitely stood out. Where at first in this era of cheap jump scare horror movies and bland monster movies (like the most recent remake of The Mummy), the idea of a remake of The Invisible Man did nothing for me. The trailer dropped though and my god did it suck me in. Not only is the incredible Elisabeth Moss taking the staring role, but the psychological thriller perspective they seem to be taking feels legitimately terrifying and inspired. Sure there is a chance that it falls apart into an average jump-scare horror film but coming off the trailer, I have very high hopes for this film with it becoming my most anticipated film of the month.
