Hale County This Morning, This Evening (2018)
This is a weird documentary, it tells the audience close to nothing and instead lets the audience marinate in the natural emotion and drama of life. Sure it asks questions but it’s goal is never to answer them, they simply go on the roller coaster of life and let the story fall into place naturally. This style does lead to some brief moments where everything lines up perfectally to give us something really special, but for the most part I found this film to be kinda empty.
It’s a movie that takes some really interesting artistic approaches (such as sitting on a scene without cutting for a long time), but instead of furthering my interest in the story being told I found it kinda distracting. I spent more time appreciating the artistic choices rather than the art itself. The casualness of this film also just doesn’t fully work with a feature length film. Despite being just over an hour long I still found that this film dragged and became stale at points, I think this direction and style of film much more suits a short film. It lacks the urgency or thesis to fully invest someone for its full runtime. It still isn’t terrible and as I mentioned it has its moments where the emotions fully come through and connect to the audience and the filmmaking behind this film is great, it just couldn’t find a purpose or question strong enough to make it an experience worthy of its runtime.
