Classmates is a cute LGBT anime romance film that is genuinely sweet. There is plenty of well-written lines that suck you into this relationship and creates a genuine connection between the main characters. I also like how honest the relationship feels especially as a high school romance, it doesn't feel like most Hollywood romances where everything is smooth and perfect. How this film handles the awkwardness and layers with subjects such public affection and sex felt refreshing and unique to most in this genre. The animation is also great, not only is the actual quality really high but they storyboard this movie with real artistic value.
Unfortunately, I don't think this film has the depth to be considered a true classic. At only an hour runtime it has to focus on building the relationship as a whole rather than the individual characters themselves, this caused me to feel a lack of connection with each one individually and make the story less impactful entirely. I also will say a lot of this movie doesn't push past your average LGBT romance film, where they focus more on different interesting aspects of it the emotional value behind most of this film feels pretty standard.
