A Star is Born (2018)
I went into this movie with a lot of hype already built for it. I had never seen any of the other versions of this story and the early buzz coming out of film festivals made me hopefully that this would be a good adaptation for an introduction. The trailers looked amazing and as a huge fan of her music I was really excited to see Lady Gaga act on such a big scale. The thing with having high hopes for a movie is that it opens the door to be let down, however A Star is Born still not only lived up to my expectations but even went beyond them easily becoming one of my favorite films of 2018.
One thing that is being really overlooked when it comes to this movie is how much it should of failed, this was an ambitious project that not only saw a celebrity taking on one of the biggest roles of her acting career really early on in her journey but also an actor making his directoral debut, and also trying to balance that with being a lead actor in said film. Bradley Cooper makes one of the best directoral debuts of the year and has a willingness to take risks and make unique artistic decisions that not only give the film a unique feel but also impressed the hell out of me. Gaga also gave a skillfully performance that was extremely well crafted for such a new actor with moments of subtlety that normally takes years of experience to master.
This movie also excels as a music rooted movie with an amazing soundtrack that will be talked about for years to come and an overall feeling of being on stage and engagement with the music that also put Cooper's impressive direction on full display. I will also say that this was easily one of the most touching movies of the year with a final 15 minutes that had the entire audience in my screening in tears. Maybe it was because I had no clue where the story was going due to not seeing the other versions but when this movie wants to it hits hard and leaves a memorable scar on the audience by the end. A Star is Born truly impressed me and as I mentioned is easily in the conversation for best films of the year.
